Sonja works in the kitchens aboard Captain Murdoch's guildship. She and her brother were both sold into indentured servitude due to the poverty in their village, caused by economic pressure from the fishing Guilds.
Her design needed to reflect their poor background as well as the jobs she needs to perform. Her many raggedy layers reveal the cooler climate, and as well as the hand-knit items. Parts of her wardrobe used to belong to Mikael, including the hat, layered shirts and rubber boots. The apron points to her occupation, as well as her pale of bread. Her stance shows her timidity, and the lantern symbolizes her struggle to find her own way while her brother is held captive and can no longer guide her.
