This book follows the story of Leah, who says that her dragon, Roary, is scared of the dark, which naturally means Leah should stay up with Roary to keep her company, patrol their castle, and practice her sword fighting.
Leah's mother wisely encourages her with a bedtime snack and a hug, knowing the whole time that it is not Roary who fears the dark. She saves the day with a nightlight, and Leah and Roary find the courage to go to bed.
