This is a tale based on the original tale "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Anderson. Cleo's birthday comes at long last, the one when she would finally be allowed to visit the human world above the sea.
Even though the mermaid and human kingdoms exist in tension and suspicion toward each other, Cleo is fascinated by the human realm. On her birthday, she watches the busy town until after the the sun set. When a storm arises and she rescues the human prince from drowning at sea, she shows both kingdoms that life is happier in friendship.
Once I had designed Cleo's character and decided on a color scheme, I made a turn- around of her character. This allows me to ensure consistency when drawing her across multiple pages.
