Over their years in the band of Beth'kali freedom fighters, Tarefa became Halim's closest friend. After Beth'kalon was conquered, Tarefa was made the slave of a Gilyavan nobleman who started a racing track for the new dinosaurs brought from Beth'kalon. Tarefa was one of their trainers. Racing was not the only business he dealt in however, and sometimes made Tarefa come along to secret dinosaur fighting rings to handle the dinosaurs he planned to sell there. On one of these occasions, Halim's band ambushed the ring, freeing the dinosaurs and bringing out Beth'kali slaves with them. Tarefa was offered freedom, and she took one of her master's baby raptors with her, which she named Seph'tali.
Tarefa's design needed to be extremely practical for her lifestyle in the desert band, and for riding. The bow and arrow is a ranged weapon that gives her flexibility while riding and matches the fast and darting nature of her dinosaur. She also wields a sword from atop Seph'tali because the raptor's height allows that to still be effective in close combat.
Tarefa wrestles with bitterness against the kingdom of Gilyavan, as well as Halim's regent, Qadir, which is a major growth point for her later on in her story. Her darker color palette reflects this inner struggle and how she sees the world.
